Advanced Theater: The Shakespeare Scholarship

The Advanced Scholarship Program includes significant scholarship assistance for students who exhibit enthusiasm and interest in furthering their studies of the works of William Shakespeare at Blue Lake. Students are selected via video audition, with preferred placement auditions due by February 28th, and second round auditions due by March 28th.

Prepare to Apply

This application should be completed by the student who is applying for a scholarship.  You will need the following items in order to complete this application:

  1. Your email address and your parent’s email address
  2. Your home address, and the name of the county in which you live
  3. Your School District name and your School Building name
  4. Your school arts instructor name and email address; and private teacher if applicable
  5. If you are auditioning at your school for a Blue Lake Scholarship representative, you will be asked to enter the date of your audition. If you are not auditioning in-person for a Blue Lake Scholarship representative, you will also be asked to upload your video audition (for musicians, dancers, and actors) or portfolio presentation (for visual artists or creative writers).

 

Audition Requirements

  • A dramatic / serious Shakespearean monologue; approximately 2 minutes.
  • A comic Shakespearean monologue; approx. 2 minutes.
  • A statement explaining your interest in studying Shakespearean acting.
  • Letter of recommendation from your theater teacher and/or director endorsing your acting ability and citizenship.

Auditions will be evaluated on the following key elements:

  • Vocal clarity (diction and support)
  • Clarity of character and circumstance
  • A clear, effective, and appropriate dramatic structure
  • Grounded and meaningful physical choices
  • Comic timing and honest emotional connection, respectively
Instrumental Music

Instrumentalists: include a current solo or etude (accompanied or unaccompanied), or an excerpt from your current orchestra, band, or jazz band music (your teacher can help you select an appropriate section). Include three major or minor scales demonstrating the best of your range and abilities.

 

Percussionists: your solo, etude, or excerpt should be performed on snare or a mallet keyboard instrument. Scales should be demonstrated on a mallet instrument.

 

Note: Guitar and soprano sax are not eligible for Merit Scholarships.

Vocal Music

 A short series of vocal warm-ups demonstrating vocal range, and a prepared solo (accompanied or unaccompanied).

Theater

Brief monologue of your choice 1-2 minutes in length; and a musical excerpt if auditioning for Musical Theater.

Dance

A brief classical or contemporary combination 1-2 minutes in length, along with demonstrations of 1st arabesque en l’air, la seconde position tendue a terre and en l’air, and the following combinations: adage, pirouette, and petite allegro. Make sure the dancer’s body stays in the video frame at all times.

Art

Portfolio review includes photos of three to five original works. Include a variety of media if possible.

Creative Writing

Portfolio review includes samples of three to five original works. Include a variety of genres if possible.

Prepare your file for upload

  • Accepted file formats: mp4, mov, avi, mkv, wmv, pdf, doc, docx
  • Maximum file size: 550MB
  • Submit only necessary criteria: You may upload 1 recommendation file and up to 3 audition files
  • Name your files: ArtsDiscipline-Description ex: Shakespeare-Dramatic, Shakespeare-Comedic

Theater auditions: At the beginning of each video, state your first and last name, along with your age and arts discipline. For example: “My name is Renee Fleming, I am 14 years old, and I am a vocalist.” Do not use any form of editing or acoustic altering effects in your audition. Make sure your submission contains all required criteria for your audition.
