Health Services

Blue Lake’s Health Services consists of health leaders, medical professionals, and certified health assistants. Supervised by the Director of Health Services, the health staff provides medical care to the camp community throughout the summer season.

Blue Lake’s Health Lodge operates 24 hours a day and offers basic first-aid care and medication storage for campers. Camp Nurses and other certified personnel are available throughout the day to assist campers with medical needs. Ambulance and hospital care are available 15 minutes from the camp. Transportation is provided by qualified health personnel.

Camper Health History

Michigan State Law requires that all campers provide the camp with their health history and parent/guardian signed release statements for any health care. Campers will not be accepted on Opening Day without a health record. Michigan law also requires that all medication (prescription & non-prescription) be stored in the camp’s Health Facilities and dispensed there. Your camper’s health history and other medical requirements are collected during the online registration process. All information is due 30 days prior to arrival.

Health Concerns and Accommodations

Arrangements for enrolling children with significant physical limitations, medical concerns, or cognitive or behavioral disabilities must be made prior to submitting the camp application. Examples include but are not limited to diabetes, life-threatening allergies, injectable medications, mobility concerns, and autism spectrum disorders. Campers should be able to manage their personal care and self-regulate behavior in a community-based environment. Call for further information prior to enrolling, and submit detailed information when you register.

Dietary Restrictions

Blue Lake accommodates a wide variety of food allergies and dietary restrictions. While we work to greatly limit some common allergens, such as peanuts and tree nuts, there is not a separate allergen-free menu or food preparation area in our kitchen. In addition to our daily menu options (which include a vegetarian option at each meal), Blue Lake provides limited gluten-free and dairy-free options as a menu supplement for participants with those dietary needs. If your child is not able to consume menu items due to a significant health restriction such as a life-threatening allergy or a serious gastrointestinal disease, you may supplement our menu with personal food or beverage. However, some limitations apply. Contact healthservices@bluelake.org or call 800-221-3796 for further details and menu information prior to enrolling.
