Blue Lake in 2010

For the past 44 years, one of Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp’s primary objectives in education has been to provide our campers the opportunity to witness as many art forms as possible during their time with us. That is why Blue Lake continues to provide varied arts experiences for its students, whether that means going to an opera, viewing an art exhibit, listening to a live broadcast of a symphony orchestra, attending a chamber music recital, observing a master class, or watching a ballet – all of which are part of every session at Blue Lake.

In 2010, for the first time, every Blue Lake camper will now have the opportunity to attend a Shakespearean presentation in our newly constructed replica of an Elizabethan Theater. The new theater, dubbed The Rose in honor of one of London’s first of the Elizabethan period (circa 1587), is a synthesis of various popular 16th century English theaters. According to architect Dick Borgeson, the design is based upon surviving sketches and documents from that period. The Rose, approximately ½ the size of Shakespeare’s Globe Theater in London, has a traditional thrust stage, a Juliet balcony, seating for approximately 600 in two galleries, plus a groundling area providing space for an additional 150 attendees in the yard.

For more information about this exciting project see the Rose Theater.

As recently stated by Governor Jennifer Granholm, “Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp is the largest provider of arts education to Michigan children and youth.” We remain committed to providing quality, unique arts experiences for all of our students -- in 2010, and for many years to come.
