Virtuoso pianist and master composer Joanne Brackeen has been called “the Picasso of jazz piano.” In her hands, the history of jazz is created and recreated as she floats seamlessly between traditional and free styles. Like Marian, Brackeen has been a trailblazer for women in jazz. The two friends get together on McPartland's “Ambiance” and Coltrane's “Giant Steps.”

“Off the A-Train: Paul Gonsalves” - Tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves is best known for the epic solo he took with Duke Ellington's orchestra during a 1956 concert at the Newport Jazz Festival. This program highlights Gonsalves' recordings away from the Ellington band, with trumpeter Clark Terry and others.

Pianist John Lewis was the musical director behind the highly original Modern Jazz Quartet, with Milt Jackson, Percy Heath, and Kenny Clarke. On this 1989 appearance, Lewis demonstrates his unmistakably light touch on his tunes “Django” and “Afternoon in Paris,” and joins Marian for a duet of “Delauney's Dilemma.”

“Gennett Records: The Little Studio That Could” - Old rugs hung from the ceilings of the little ragtag studio and the walls were stuffed with straw to dampen the sound from the trains passing by. Some of the most important jazz recordings in American musical history were recorded in the back of the Starr piano factory. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and guests perform the music of Jelly Roll Morton, Bix and His Gang and more from Starr-Gennett Records.

“Buddy DeFranco - Tommy Gumina” - Buddy DeFranco was the best of the few modern jazz clarinetists. Gumina, his frequent partner was another rare virtuoso, a modern jazz accordionist! They had a tough time because of the unpopularity of their instruments, but their Quartet and work as sidemen were amazing.

On this 1983 program, he performs his “Dailey Double” and duets with Marian on “Just One of Those Things.”

“Ride, Red, Ride’: New Orleans Trumpeter Henry ‘Red’ Allen Jr.” - New Orleans trumpeter Henry ‘Red’ Allen Jr. made a name for himself on the 1930s’ New York jazz scene as a hot trumpet soloist, singer, and entertainer. He later went on to hold a long residency as bandleader at Manhattan’s famed Metropole Café in Times Square. The Jim Cullum Jazz Band and special guests tell the story and perform tunes from Allen’s long career.

“Dorothy Donegan - Jutta Hip” - Two female piano players who deserved more recognition: Dorothy was a virtuoso and colorful personality from the 30's to the 90's, German-born Jutta survived Hitler in the 40's to become a cool bop player in America in the 50's.
